7 Tried & Tested Content Marketing Ideas for eCommerce Businesses to Try Now

According to a recent study, 81% of shoppers conduct research online before making a purchase. It’s no wonder that eCommerce businesses are focused on attracting the attention of such customers via content marketing on various online marketing channels. You’re probably an eCommerce business yourself or an agency in charge of creating content for one.
If you are either, you probably know how hard it is to create content that works and helps you achieve your goals. This post describes 7 content marketing ideas that have worked for other eCommerce businesses for you to try.
Note: [4 out of 7] of these ideas are easier to execute with the help of a social media management and employee advocacy platform like DrumUp.

1. Find artistic social media ambassadors

What you create/curate visually will decide how successful you are on the internet. However, creating visually stunning social media content can be an expensive affair, which is where UGC comes in. Visually inclined social media ambassadors can help you create great content and market it via engaged social media channels.
Check out how Huckberry utilizes it’s ambassador generated social media content.

2. Create How-to or DIY videos featuring products

Instead of simply displaying your products, try and create use-cases for them within your content. The best ways to do this is through How-to and DIY videos that not only feature your products but also describe the best way to use them. How-to videos are great for complex products that typically need guides or manuals and DIY videos are great for products that have multiple use-cases.
Check out how Lowes has created a DIY video around its DIY fireplace kit product.

3. Connect products to celebrities and trends

People are influenced by celebs’ style, food-habits and behaviors in general. eCommerce marketers can use this to their advantage by connecting products to current trends and what celebrities are doing/wearing. To implement this strategy, you first have to identify which celebrities you target groups follow and then follow them to identify occurrences to use in your marketing.
Here’s how Mr Porter connects its products to celebrity lifestyles.
4

4. Share customer and employee stories

Stories are at the heart of social media. You can drastically improve customer engagement by increasing the incorporation of stories into your content marketing. Anything shared in story form – behind-the-scenes content, employee achievements and struggles, customers’ achievements and struggles – can go a long way in improving the results of your content marketing.
Check out the engagement on stories shared by Asda. Customers care about and connect with well-narrated stories.
5
Note: You can get more engagement and reach more of your target groups by getting employees to share your stories via DrumUp’s employee advocacy platform.

5. Display products and promotions via engaging GIFs/videos

Yet another creative way to share products and promotions is via engaging GIFs/videos. Creating GIFs/videos today isn’t much of a task, considering the availability of several easy-to-use GIF/video editing tools. The easiest way to incorporate GIFs/videos, however, is by curating them with the right caption and connecting them to your products/services. When doing so, ensure that you verify the license of the content that you wish to share.
Here’s how Net-A-Porter incorporates GIFs into its content marketing.
6
Note: DrumUp lets you curate copyright free GIFs from GIPHY within the dashboard.

6. Curate relevant content from non-competing entities

Content curation not only saves you time and money but also helps you build relationships with marketing allies in your industry. Today, almost every entity on social media runs on collaborations. And you can create collaborations by curating the right content. All you have to do is ensure that you have the right permissions to share engaging content.
Here’s an example of Grazia sharing the right content (with attribution).
7
Note: DrumUp lets you set-up RSS feeds and keyword based content streams for content curation. The keyword based content streams come with @mention and #tags, making it easy for you to attribute content.

7. Get C-suite executives and employees involved

People connect most with people, which is why you need to get your C-suite executives and employees involved in content marketing. Organic reach when C-suite and executives and employees share will also be much higher than when you share, giving you extra reach and engagement. Employee advocacy is also said to increase conversions, retention and general customer engagement.
2
Note: With DrumUp’s employee advocacy platform, you can simplify content sharing with employees, gamify participating and track the impact of their shares.
Wrap
Content marketing is the smartest way for eCommerce companies to reach and influence their target groups on online marketing channels. With effective content marketing ideas, you can engage your audience and surpass your content marketing goals.

Meat and Potatoes for Your Affiliate Diet

Think of banner ads as the spice in your affiliate diet. Sprinkle them around, but for a heartier helping of sales, you’ll need something more solid!
Learn to give your visitors longer, more descriptive pre-sales text. Revamp your affiliate advertising using these simple steps:

  1. Pull the Reader in
  2. Introduce the Product
  3. Explain the Product’s Significance
  4. Tell the Reader to Make a Purchase

Pull the Reader in

To convince your audience that your text is worth reading, make your first sentence or two very interesting. Make a bold statement, say something seemingly ridiculous, or appeal to your prospect’s emotional side. Then, tie this grabber in with the rest of your copy.

Introduce the Product

What is the product you’re advertising? What does it do? Directly after your grabber, give a compact explanation of your product. Keep this explanation short, while still being very clear. This should still be a very short section of your text.

Explain the Product’s Significance

What will it do for me?
By writing your own copy, you can directly target your unique audience. Make the most of this opportunity! Clearly explain how your readers will benefit from this product.
No one knows your audience like you do. Suggest a variety of product uses just for them, and give examples. This is the time for details – make this section long and rich.

Tell the Reader to Make a Purchase

You’ve come so far – you’ve laid out exactly what the product is and how it will help your unique audience. Now, seal the deal – tell your readers to purchase the product! Include your affiliate link in this section.
This step may sound strange, but it’s necessary. Often, people hear about a product and are genuinely interested, but fail to actually make a purchase. A clear call to a simple action cuts down on buyer ambivalence. Don’t be pushy – just change your verb tenses to the imperative. Instead of:
“If you think that you fit this profile, you might want to think about buying this product.”
Say: “Click here to order an account today.”
Drive Sales – Use Long Copy

If you don’t feel ready to write long copy yourself, ask your affiliate program manager for help! Many companies release well-written articles by respected authors that you can reprint free of charge.
The novelty of the Web is wearing off. People online now are busy. Surfers won’t make a purchase unless you make a great case for what they’ll get out of it. And you’re not going to do that with just a banner ad.
Do you use long or short copy? Tell us this in the comments below. If you find this content useful share it with your friends.

Affiliate Marketing in 2018, What You Need to Know

Affiliate marketing is constantly changing and evolving and 2018 is going to be another year when we can expect some incremental shifts and some more radical shifts. I am going to spend a bit here explaining where I see affiliate marketing in 2018 heading and hopefully shed some light on the industry as a whole. Before I get started, I want to clear your mind of ONE thing. Affiliate Marketing is not going anywhere. The opportunity to build a full-time business through affiliate marketing is still as possible as it has ever been.
In fact, there is becoming a greater shift of investment by large companies into their affiliate programs and their affiliates. You can expect more of this in the year ahead.
There are 5 main shifts/changes that you can expect in the year ahead within the AM world.

1. Affiliate Programs Need Affiliates More Than Ever.

I am sensing a bit of desperation in the commerce world. Very successful retailers of the "offline" world are losing their grasp of their overall market because of the "progressive online" companies that have focused primarily in the online retail space.
You have the likes of Etsy, EBay, Amazon, AliExpress that have truly invested a great deal of their energies into affiliates and their online retail experience. They are continuing to thrive and grow and will do so in 2018.
Then you have companies like Sears, Toys R Us (as well as several others) that are going completely out of business because they didn't focus on affiliates and their overall online retail experience.
We are going to see more of this. There will be more retailers that will go bankrupt in 2018. There will be a much greater focus by existing retailers in their online experience, affiliate programs, and working at a higher rate with affiliate marketers.
Those that continue to invest in this manner will see positive growth in their businesses in 2018. Those that don't, are unfortunately going to experience the same demise as many other "offline focused" retailers that simply do not get the new economy.

2. Authority Bloggers Will Continue to Reap the Rewards.

One thing that you can be assured about is that those that focus on OWNING their niche in 2018, are going to continue to attract the attention of larger affiliate marketing agencies, networks, and affiliate programs.
As an affiliate, you have a lot of power as you start to accrue a brand in the industry. The same way celebrities attract huge contracts for selling contracts through commercials if you focus on building your brand in your given niche/industry you are going to continue to attract these types of partnerships.
Often times as you gain true branding in your niche. Affiliate programs consider offering you more incentives or better commission (like our all-expense-paid Super Affiliate Conference).
So embrace your niche, work to become the best within it, and don't try to diversify and wear too many hats within the online world. It only takes ONE niche to be very successful online (as in millions in revenue per year).
Also, help as many people as you can in your niche. Make it a goal of 2018. If you can help 100% more people this year, you can expect 100% growth. If you can help 500% more people this year, you can expect 500% growth in your affiliate revenues.
If you haven't already had the opportunity to check out my Live Class on "Insights into Efficiently Becoming an Expert in 2018", I recommend you do so. All Premium members have access and it is going to give you some unique perspective on building a brand through the course of a year. It CAN be done.

3. More People Online = More Affiliate Marketing Opportunity

Every year the world population grows. Ever year access to the Internet continues to grow. Every year more people are more active on the Internet than ever, through more devices.
There was a point in time when people were fearing the demise of desktop computing and people actually using anything but a mobile device. It was a big fear, in particular in the SEO space and with affiliate marketers.
What has happened though is that people now are online more than ever, people often times have 3-4 devices they can connect to the internet with and consume information with (desktop, laptop, iPad, smartphone, now home enabled devices), and people are now spending more money than ever as a result.
People also have ramped up their search habits.
Offline constructs like libraries, books, newspapers and offline retailers are continuing to become obsolete, meanwhile, anything online is only gaining more popularity.
This is a good thing for affiliate marketers. In fact, the opportunity has never been so big and the affiliate marketing snowball is going to continue to grow in size in 2018.

4. E-commerce is Thriving, More Hybrid Opportunities

Affiliate marketing is great. But it certainly is not the only way to monetize website traffic and if there are greater profits outside of affiliate marketing within certain pages on your website, then authority sites are going to continue to leverage these.
For example, if you are selling something that is not branded (a wooden clock), there are many opportunities to drop ship through companies like AliExpress where you can ship products at a much lower cost than you can charge for them, sometimes you can make 100% plus on the actual price of the product.

Wooden Clocks AliExpress
If you take a $15 clock like the one above, you sell it for $30, you double your money. This is a logic that has been in place, but where the "brand" isn't as sensitive (like a generic clock), you are going to see more opportunities in this space. There is much more administration and costs associated with accepting payment, dealing with returns, and managing product support. But accepting payment and hosting a store on your website through plugins like WooCommerce can be a great opportunity.
We have some existing training on this, but we are going to be exploring facets in the direct "e-commerce" space through more live classes and training in 2018.
Affiliate marketing is definitely going to remain our focus with the largest share of our training, but we also feel there are going to be new opportunities arising out of the e-commerce side of things that conventional affiliate-based sites will be able to leverage (as technology continues to improve).
The ability to operate a hybrid website where you recommend products through affiliate programs, as well as other means like drop shipping, and owning your own products/services are going to become more of a reality in 2018 and beyond.

5. Lots of Opportunity Outside of Amazon

Amazon is eating a disproportionate piece of the pie, the most we have ever seen. They are blowing away sales records and one thing that can be said about Amazon in the last 10 years is that they have invested in their affiliate program, their affiliates (associates) and maximizing revenue.
During Black Friday of 2017 it was stated that Amazon took anywhere between 45-50% of all online sales. That is a big deal, but this certainly does not mean that Amazon should be viewed as your only option. Online sales broke records once again in 2017, and will do so again in 2018.

Amazon Black Friday Sales
Affiliate programs are going to continue to pop up. Networks continue to recruit brand new merchants and continue to expand their offerings. And often times you can find much better commission share (% wise) outside of Amazon.
There are 100,000's of affiliate programs out there across every industry offering a wide range of commission rates (1-75%), so explore your options and be strategic about what you promote on your sites. There is likely a greater windfall of revenue if you do your due diligence and you seek affiliate programs outside of just Amazon's.
Cookie life (the time in which you get credit for an affiliate commission) are typically better than Amazon as well through other affiliate programs and networks. Some like Wealthy Affiliate, offer affiliates LIFETIME cookies, meaning you get a commission if someone goes through your affiliate link and joins at any time, forever. Compare this to shorter cycle cookies like Amazon (which are only 24 hours).
Successful merchants on Amazon and other mass shopping agencies are going to become more privy to the benefits of having their own independent affiliate programs and either join affiliate networks or set-up their own independent affiliate programs. They will earn the merchants larger profit margins this way and they will also be able to pay affiliate more than commissions. A win/win.

There you have it.
Those are some trends I see either taking place or evolving in 2018. The affiliate marketing industry has never been more exciting in my opinion and you can expect the most affiliate opportunities we have ever seen in the year ahead.
I would love to hear your feedback though. Where do you see the affiliate marketing industry heading in 2018? What are some trends you have noticed in your own niches? Do you have any questions or personal feedback? Drop a comment below!
Here is to a successful a brilliant 2018 ahead!

Must Haves for a Social Media Strategy That Gets Results

THE significance of social media is blatantly obvious when you get the facts. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly two-thirds of American adults (65%) use social networking sites.  The average person has five social media accounts and spends around 1 hour and 40 minutes browsing these networks every day. Clearly, social media has a profound impact on people’s lives.

The use of social media has long been recognized by businesses looking to reach new customers.  In order to utilize these platforms to do so, businesses must establish a strategy, which of course, has to align with their overall business plan and company goals.
While every business has different plans and goals, experts agree there are certain characteristics every social media strategy must have in order to be successful and yield great results.

Clearly Defined Goals

The number one requirement for a strategy to be successful?  Clearly defined goals.
Don’t start with a certain social media strategy just to have one.  Instead, think about your business and how you can benefit from social media.
Keep in mind that not all social networks are perfect for each business, nor are you required to be active on all of them.  Choose the ones that are suitable for the type of promotion you want to work on.  For example, if you’re a photographer looking to get hired, using Instagram is surely a part of your strategy.  As an image based platform, it will allow you to display your work and thus demonstrate your skill to potential customers.  On the other hand, if you own a restaurant, Facebook is a platform you just cannot overlook.  This will allow customers to check in, leave a review and share their experience with followers.  In fact, you could even encourage people to do so, by giving out free food or drinks in return for checking in!
Selecting the best social media platform for your business can really help maximize your online exposure.  This is just one way to help clearly define your desired results.  Here are some other specific goals to consider when setting up your social media strategy:
  • Increasing sales
  • Generating more traffic from social media
  • Obtaining leads
  • Expanding the mailing list
  • Improving the influence of your brand
As you can see, obtaining more followers isn’t one of the goals we want to highlight.  There is no actual benefit for your company in this case, except for bragging rights about the number of followers you have.  Realistically, your reach is only important if it helps achieve a tangible, quantifiable goal for your company.  Social Media strategies with clearly defined goals are the ones that help you grow your business.

Valuable Content

If you have spent any time on the topic of social media, you must have come across the statement “Content is the king”.  Most marketing experts stand by this statement for a reason.  Due to the rapid expansion of social media, we have reached a point that there is an excessive amount of information online.  And not everything you find is useful.  In fact, a large percentage of it is junk.  This is why quality content has surfaced as a tool to find and filter out all of those scammers and shady marketers who have flooded the internet.  Content marketing is the answer to those scammers who seek to profit with no effort.
You should know that scamming your way through online marketing is not possible nowadays.  If you want a social media strategy that gets results, you need to invest both your time and your budget into this strategy.  This really comes down to providing quality content.  Sharing useful status updates, posting original images, and recording instructional videos are some of the tactics that will help you.
Content that is high-quality, content that engages, content that gets shared, is ultimately the content that gets conversions.

Consistency

We have all stumbled upon obstacles with social media marketing.  Posting day after day and getting no response can get really frustrating, but you mustn’t give up.  If you are completely serious and really want social media marketing to work, you need to be consistent, even when times get tough.
Establish a schedule for posting and be sure to respond in a timely manner.  Next, think about your approach, because consistency matters here as well.  You can’t go all formal one day, and the next choose to post some lousy jokes, throwing in a few swear words along the way.  This approach is certainly not something a serious marketer would advise, as it won’t generate any results in the long run.  You need to find your own voice, determine the language and a post structure that appeals to your target group and stick with it to be really successful in social media marketing.

Solutions that Work… for YOU

Finally, we get to the analysis of how your company has been performing on social media.  This is an important aspect of the strategy, as you’ll learn a lot about your target group, about your approach, and eventually about your business.  Even though a lot of so-called experts might share tips such as: post every day, post a lot of images, post one promotional update out of five quality ones – in reality, there is no concrete evidence that this will work for you.
You should know that a successful social media marketing strategy is a completely customized solution, based on the type of business, on the product and services it provides, on the target group, etc. This means, that only you, as the one who analyzes the performance of your social media marketing, is qualified to say “this works, and this doesn’t”.
Ask yourself: is your strategy getting you closer to where you want to be?  Is it helping you take your business to the next step?  Is it allowing you to reach your goals?  Once you reach this conclusion, you’ll be able to refine your strategy and maximize the results you obtain through social media marketing.
Take a minute and think about your own strategy.  Does it include these must-haves?  Or maybe it involves others that you see as vital to your success?  If so, fill us in!  We’d love to hear your personal social media strategy must-haves.

Three Ways To Grow Your Community Online

Online marketing is a constantly evolving challenge. One day we are told email marketing is the key to success and the next that email is dead. The way we think about reaching, capturing and engaging with our audience and our customers’ needs to reflect how they themselves engage online.
For me, that’s all about community. Ironically as we become more and more enmeshed in our digital worlds, the desire for connection becomes even greater. So how do we bring those two worlds together?
Here are 3 easy to implement ways to grow your online community.

Launch a Facebook Group

Facebook Groups are a fantastic way to build community around your core area of expertise and knowledge and like most things online, it’s about the quality of engagement, not the number of members. Of course, you want to grow your group, but do not be put off from setting one up by thinking that you need thousands of members for it to be successful, you don’t.
What you do need is to provide value and a real sense of community. That will require you to dedicate time into the group each day, to initiate conversations, to engage in others conversations and of course to steer the group itself.
So how do you start one? Pick a topic that you are passionate about and that is related to your core business. Start a group and make sure that you have some great graphics in place for your FB banner etc. You want to start your group looking as well put together and professional as possible. You don’t need to pay a designer to do this, you can do it very simply using apps like Canva.
Now its nearly time to start inviting people into the group, but before you do that, make sure that you’ve embedded some great content into the group. Here’s some examples:
Have a series of webinars already set up that people can join.
Create checklists and other useful documents that your members can use.
Set up regular discussions: Monday Meet Ups, Friday Promos – it sets a theme and an expectation for what people can get from the group.
Final part … start to invite people to join!
TOP TIPS
Just remember to not add people to groups without their permission, this is really, really annoying and will likely prevent anyone from joining. Instead send a personal message, whether through FB itself or another medium … just make sure that the message is personal and not the same message sent to multiple people. It is crucial that you do this for the first 20,50, 100 people. They will be the ones that create the most engagement in your group and make new members who come to ‘look’ at the group want to stay.

Facebook Live Broadcasts

Love or hate video, it’s here to stay and the best way to get involved is FB Live. Pick a topic that you want to talk about or share with your community and press Live Video … that’s all you need to do to get started.
FB Live will allow you to build relationships with your community far quicker and deeper – it’s the next best thing to meeting people in person. FB Live gives you an opportunity to showcase both your knowledge and your personality. This does not mean that you need to be an extrovert to make FB Live work for you, all you need to do is be yourself.
As FB Live is part of Facebook, they make sure that those videos are seen by far more of your community than other videos that you post, like You Tube, so it’s a great way to reach more people.
TOP TIPS
Set up a schedule so that people know what time and days you will be broadcasting. Consistency is key. I have a regular FB Live, every Wednesday at 6am GMT on my Facebook Business Page – everyone now knows they will always find me there, every week at the same time and each week, our audience grows.
Make sure you name your FB Live each week and include a link to your website / landing page – you do this in the text as you launch your FB Live.

Create Content That People Can Share

Whether you’re creating inspirational quotes, blogs, FB Live Broadcasts or Community Groups, you want people to share them. Sharing is caring and the best way to grow your community is through recommendation.
Make sure your content isn’t just about you and promoting your business; you want to provide real, meaningful value that people want to share. Your content wants to showcase your genius, give tremendous value and leave people wanting more.
TOP TIPS
Make sure that you have links to your website or relevant landing page in all your copy.
If you’re going to do inspirational quotes, make sure they are relevant and original … your own where possible!
Remember to ASK people to share your content! Sounds simple, but it’s easy to forget. IF you want people to share your FB Live broadcasts, you have to ask people and remind them how to do it. If you want to grow your Facebook Group, you want your members to recommend other people to join. Make that easy for them to do so; not just by asking them, but also by providing them with the links that they need to share.
If you’re not already in my Facebook Group, The Freedom Collective, what are you waiting for?! ☺
